Overview & Characteristics

Silicon metal (also known as Industrial Silicon, Crystalline Silicon,Metallic Silicon)

It is an industrial basic material smelted from silica. Its main component, silicon, usually has a content between 98% and 99.99%, and the rest are impurities such as iron, aluminum, and calcium.

It has an appearance of dark gray lumps or powder with a metallic luster. According to the impurity content, metallic silicon can be classified into grades such as 553, 441, 421, and 3303. The digits respectively represent the upper limits of iron, aluminum, and calcium contents; for example, grade 553 means Fe ≤ 0.5%, Al ≤ 0.5%, and Ca ≤ 0.3%.

High-purity metallic silicon (≥99.99%) has excellent semiconductor properties and is a core raw material in the electronic information industry.

Production Process

Selected silica (SiO₂ ≥ 99%) and reducing agents such as petroleum coke and charcoal are used. The raw materials are mixed and then fed into a submerged arc furnace, followed by energization and heating. Liquid silicon is discharged through the silicon tapping outlet; impurities are removed by adding auxiliaries like fluorite and limestone. After ingot casting, it is crushed into standard specifications (e.g., 10-100mm lumps or 30-425 mesh powder).

FAQ

Q: How to choose the right grade of metal silicon?

A: Select based on application: metallurgical grades (e.g., 553, 441) for alloys; chemical grades (e.g., 421, 3303) for silicones; high-purity grades (99.99%) for semiconductors

Q: Where are the main production areas in China? Any quality differences?

A: Xinjiang (low cost, thermal power), Yunnan/Sichuan (clean hydropower, seasonal impact), Fujian (mature technology). Northwestern products may have less stable purity, while southwestern regions excel in high-purity silicon
