Carburizer
Overview & Characteristics
Carburizer is a high-purity carbon additive used in the metallurgical industry. Its main component is graphitized carbon (C ≥ 98.5%), with extremely low impurity content such as sulfur (S ≤ 0.5%) and nitrogen (N ≤ 0.03%). Its carbon atoms exhibit a graphite crystal structure, providing high absorption rates (90%–95%) and rapid dissolution characteristics. It can significantly increase the carbon equivalent of steel/cast iron and improve mechanical properties such as hardness and wear resistance.

Production Process
Raw Material Preparation and Processing: The primary raw materials (such as petroleum coke, anthracite, etc.) are crushed and ground to achieve a particle size suitable for production.
Calcination: The raw materials undergo heat treatment in high-temperature furnaces (e.g., calcination furnaces) at approximately 1300°C to remove moisture, volatile matter, and other impurities, thereby increasing the fixed carbon content.
Graphitization (Applicable to high-quality carburizers): The calcined material (e.g., petroleum coke) is subjected to ultra-high temperatures of around 3000°C in graphitization furnaces (such as Acheson furnaces). This process transforms the carbon atom arrangement into an ordered graphite structure, significantly reducing the content of impurities like sulfur.
Forming and Screening:The processed material is formed into the desired shapes (e.g., briquettes, pellets) via pressing, followed by cooling and screening to obtain final products with different particle size specifications (e.g., 1-5mm, 0.5-5mm).
Packaging: The finished products are typically packaged using moisture-proof materials, such as ton bags or 25kg/bag woven bags.

Application Scenarios
Steelmaking
In electric arc furnace or converter steelmaking, it is used to adjust the carbon content of molten steel, especially when smelting medium and high carbon steel grades. The use of high-quality carburizers (e.g., low-sulfur, low-nitrogen) helps meet the strict requirements for special steels.
Cast Iron Production
During the casting process, it can significantly increase the amount of scrap steel used and reduce or replace pig iron, thereby effectively lowering production costs. It is suitable for ductile iron, gray cast iron, etc., and helps improve the quality of molten iron and promote graphitization.

FAQ
Q: How to choose the right particle size of carburizer?
A: The choice of particle size depends on the type of melting furnace and process. Generally, induction furnaces are suitable for particles of 0.5-5mm. Particles that are too fine may burn off easily, while those too coarse may not be absorbed well by the molten metal. The specific size should be determined based on furnace type, workpiece details, etc.
Q: Why is graphitized carburizer often preferred?
A: The graphitization process arranges the carbon atoms in a regular structure, which is more conducive to dissolution and nucleation in molten iron, leading to higher absorption rates (up to 90%-95%). It also results in very low sulfur content (can be below 0.05%). Although the unit price might be higher, the high absorption rate and excellent performance often make it more cost-effective overall
